With the unanimous approval of Club President Jason Kaplan, General Manager Dan Meherin and the Board of Directors, there will be an installation this month of an exciting project that has been over two years in the making: The Hillcrest Country Club Composers and Lyricists Wall of Fame. This homage to the illustrious artistic legacy of musical writers from our Club membership roster–spanning over 100 years–can be found in the popular passageway from the Grill Room to the Men's Locker Room, between the Lounge and the Fitness Center. Conceptualized by Hillcrest member Carol Goldsmith and designed to be a growing gallery, there are 17 composers and lyricists proudly represented, many of whom are Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony winners and nominees, and all having met rigid requirements for inclusion. Guidelines for the inductees were based on research using resources such as Library of Congress Music Division, National Film Registry, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Library, Songwriters Hall of Fame, ASCAP and BMI, records from the Composers and Lyricists Guild and The Grammy Museum. Intentionally, interpreters/performers of songs, scores and melodies are not included unless they were also the writers of those original works. Exceptional teamwork was essential to this joyful endeavor. Carol conducted the required research using musical records and archives, and collaborated on the composition and details of the artistic display with technological wizard Executive Assistant Gavin LaRiviere who creatively handled the procurement of all materials and their installation, and deftly edited the photographs of the writers. Dan Meherin's idea to have a QR Code, soon to be operational, on the Wall of Fame will be a vital feature making further discovery about each artist easily accessible. The Team 'hit all the right notes' making sure this project met Hillcrest Country Club standards. May you, your families and your guests enjoy this tribute to talented Hillcrest members who have written the words and the music that enriched our lives, contributed to "The Great American Songbook", and continue to delight dancers on the dance floor, fans of film and musical theater, and audiences in concert venues around the world.
